Vineyard Estate

The Estate Through Time

The Krka Vineyard Estate, located on Trška Gora, has undergone many changes over the centuries. Dating back to the 19th century, it was first purchased by the lawyer Josef Suppan, and later passed into the hands of other owners, including the successful merchant Karel Pollack. Its most significant transformation came under the Remec family, who commissioned Slovenia’s most renowned architect, Jože Plečnik, to expand and modernise the vineyard cottage. In the second half of the 20th century, Janko and Vida Rataj developed the estate into one of the largest and most advanced vineyards in the Dolenjska region. In 1977, the pharmaceutical company Krka acquired the estate, restored the vineyard cottage, named it Krkin hram, and continued its tradition of hospitality. Today, the Krka Vineyard Estate stands as an important piece of cultural and historical heritage, linking past and present while offering guests a truly unique experience.

And what about today?

The Krka Vineyard Estate was thoroughly renovated in 2024. The thatched roofs of both buildings – a defining feature of their architectural character – were replaced. The interiors and façades were also refurbished, and the restaurant terrace and surrounding grounds were beautifully landscaped.

The History of the Krka Vineyard Estate

The Krka Vineyard Estate dates back to the early 19th century, when it was purchased in 1859 by Dr Josef Suppan – a lawyer and notary in Novo mesto, a representative of Lower Carniolan towns in the Carniolan Provincial Assembly, later the mayor of Ljubljana and a member of the National Assembly in Vienna. Renovations from his period are marked by the year 1860 engraved on the stone entrance portal.

In 1916, the estate was acquired by the successful merchant and industrialist Karel Pollack, who carried out a major renovation. In 1917, he added a wine press room with a concrete portal.

In 1928, Vladimir and Helena Remec purchased the vineyard cottage. That same year, they had both the main house and annex renovated and extended to their current size. The works were carried out according to plans by Jože Plečnik, who recommended that the roofs be thatched so the buildings would “blend more harmoniously with the local surroundings.” In that same year, the property was fitted with running water, sewerage and electricity.

In the mid-1930s, the vineyard estate on Trška gora was purchased by the graduate agronomist and viticulture expert Janko Rataj from Mačkovec. Engineer Rataj was employed at the Provincial Board for Carniola in Ljubljana. On Trška gora, his wife Vida managed the estate; she was a teacher by profession. She learned viticulture and organized the work in the vineyards during her husband’s absence; over time, the estate with noble grape varieties became the largest on Trška gora, using the most modern viticulture and cellar methods of the time and were the first in Dolenjska to cultivate portugalko.

Vida Rataj opened a wine shop in the winehouse, which became a popular spot for Sunday trips. She continued working in viticulture even after her husband’s death (1947). She sold it in 1977 to Krka, tovarni zdravil. Krka renovated the winehouse, named it Krkin hram, and continued hospitality activities there.
