Why and how does mindfulness help improve the quality of relationships and satisfaction within them?
Therapist Katja Žugman, who leads mindfulness treatments at Terme Dolenjske Toplice, explains that mindfulness positively affects our ability to focus, be present, regulate sensations and emotions, as well as our cognitive abilities.

When we are mindful, we are more aware of what is happening to us, what we are doing, and why we are doing it. Mindfulness reduces stress, increases satisfaction, and maintains inner balance — all of which are extremely important in relationships.

We choose to act in ways that build connection

Relationships can become more fulfilling simply by developing mindfulness within ourselves and bringing it into our interactions. It is essential to commit to consistently acting in ways that foster connection and the satisfaction we desire in our relationships. As we strengthen our mindfulness, we become more aware of our emotional, mental, and behavioral patterns, and we learn to respond more constructively—more in line with our inner desire for connection and our needs.

In communication, we are also able to maintain greater calmness, inner balance, and presence in the present moment, which allows for different responses. Through all this, mindfulness enables us to listen more deeply to ourselves and to others.

During your stay at Terme Dolenjske Toplice, you can join group mindfulness sessions and treatments free of charge.

They mostly take place in nature, as well as in a Zen room in the sauna area and in a hall. If you prefer individual treatments and personal guidance, you can book the Zen program or the Anti-stress energy program. Both are available for 2, 4, or 6 nights.

Even when things don’t go as planned

With mindfulness, we learn to step out of “autopilot.” Since it is impossible to always do so, an important aspect of mindful communication is also becoming aware of our reactions and being compassionate toward ourselves when we are not able to step out of them.

When we realize that we have not acted in a way that fosters connection, we can take responsibility, apologize, and choose a different response moving forward. Because conflicts and disconnections are a natural part of relationships, “repairing” them is always necessary—but mindfulness makes this easier.

Through mindful communication, we also cultivate compassion and gratitude in relationships

Gratitude toward ourselves, toward our partner, and toward our shared connection. Renowned mindfulness teacher Eckhart Tolle says:

“If you think you are enlightened, spend a week with your primary family—and then reassess your level of enlightenment.”

Relationships often awaken strong emotions in us, which can quickly trigger old learned automatic behaviors and reactions. That is why we often act on “autopilot” in relationships and conversations.

Overwhelmed by feelings and emotions, we react impulsively—often in ways that are not aligned with our true needs.

With mindful communication, we strengthen relationships and make conflict resolution easier

Mindful communication helps us become aware of our own needs as well as the needs of the person we are communicating with. Through mindfulness, we learn attentive and focused listening, without judgment and without the need for immediate—often unconstructive—reactions. We listen with openness and curiosity, thereby developing the ability for deep listening. When certain topics trigger stronger emotions in us, we become aware of them and are able to feel, observe, and express them in a way that preserves connection in the relationship.
