Winter brings shorter days, more polluted air, and therefore fewer opportunities for outdoor activity. Infections and poor well-being also occur more often, and extra kilograms accumulate more quickly.

Even in winter, our plates can be rich in nutrients that our bodies need – vitamins, minerals, and essential fatty acids. Many beneficial substances can already be found in local foods.

Foods or dishes that strengthen immunity

Sauerkraut and fermented turnips, garlic, onions, and horseradish. And apples! Apples are a real treasure trove of vitamins. If we eat a few walnut kernels with them, we will also do a lot for a healthy heart and blood vessels. We recommend buying sauerkraut and fermented turnips, radicchio, potatoes, kohlrabi, beans, lentils, chickpeas, beetroot, as well as apples and pears from local farmers.

Sauerkraut and fermented turnips are a real treasure trove of vitamins, minerals, probiotics, prebiotics, enzymes, and antioxidants. If we add beans to sauerkraut and serve it with buckwheat spoonbread or buckwheat porridge, topped with quality oil or a spoon of cracklings, we get everything our body needs during the winter months.

Every dish can be prepared in a healthier way if we pay attention to how much fat, sugar, and salt we add. The secret also lies in proper food combinations.

Which dishes do we also recommend?

Barley, millet porridge, and oatmeal, which in winter—combined with vegetables and a piece of meat or fruit—play an important role in maintaining a healthy body weight. One such dish is ričet, a traditional stew made of barley, vegetables, beans, and meat.

Raisins! Raisins are dried fruit with one of the highest levels of antioxidants, which protect against premature aging and the effects of free radicals. Since they contain little fat but plenty of carbohydrates and fiber, they are a healthy and nutritious snack.
